Most of these turtles life takes place at sea, but they always return to land to nest. At night when the sun sets, turtle moms swim to Tulum beaches, dig a nest of about 50 or 60 inches with their flippers, lay their eggs (between 85 and 120 eggs per nest), bury them with sand and return to the Caribbean Sea.

Their offspring takes between 50 and 60 days to hatch, but more complicated for these baby turtles is reach the sea before getting devoured by a predator or burning by the sun, so most of the time they try to do at night.

Since both turtles species are endangered, some nests are moved to a restricted beach area of about 40 meters where turtles birth takes place in optimal conditions. A small creek near the archaeological site of Tulum’s magical archeological zone (I can not imagine a better place to be born), where a mesh is placed to prevent local animals such as raccoon or badger devour the eggs.

In Tulum and in the whole Riviera Maya, authorities and hotel owners are very concerned about it, there is even a Sea Turtle Festival held every year since 2003 which aims to raise the local population and tourists awareness on the sea turtles protection, as one of the most primitive vertebrates in existence and now endangered too.

As taking care of the environment is our responsibility (from all of us), if you are lucky to find a turtle on the beach you have to keep a distance, be quite and calm, without flash it with lamps or photo flashes, in order to prevent abortions or stress situation which can force the scared turtle return into the sea without laying their eggs. And for the rest … enjoy the moment and the incredible experience!

All this is Tulum … And we love!
